Flight Design raises the bar for training quality

Formal Syllabus Helps Existing Pilots Transition to Fly CTLS

South Woodstock, CONNECTICUT / March 9, 2010 – Two facts are well known in the Light-Sport Aircraft community: (1) Most buyers are existing pilots who have been flying general aviation airplanes for years, and (2) The insurance industry is very keen to see better training of these pilots before they begin flying Light-Sport Aircraft (LSA). Now, Flight Design announces their “Transition Syllabus” as means to assure standardized and thorough training for all buyers of the company’s popular Light-Sport Aircraft.

“We know the insurance industry has been insisting on better training of presently-licensed pilots,” said Tom Peghiny, president of Flight Design USA, “and we agree. That’s why we invested plenty of time and gained
feedback from multiple CT-series experts to be sure we were giving new buyers the right check out in their new CTLS.”

“Though the promise remains strong for more and more new pilots to enter aviation through Sport Pilot and to end up purchasing a LSA like our CTLS or MC,” observed John Gilmore, National Sales Manager for Flight Design USA,
“we nonetheless acknowledge that most buyers have been pilots selling their older GA airplane and acquiring a new, well-equipped CTLS.”

“LSA fly somewhat differently than a heavier general aviation airplane,” explained Peghiny. “These lightweight aircraft with high power-to-weight ratios have a short take off roll, climb rapidly, control lightly, and – because they are lighter and physically smaller – can be more subject to environmental conditions. They are actually easy to fly but experienced pilots know they can benefit from additional transition training.”

The Syllabus for Transition to a Flight Design CTLS Light-Sport Airplane is a comprehensive lesson-by-lesson approach to assuring a new buyer is well trained to operate his new high performance LSA. Five hours of instruction are offered with the purchase of a CTLS and this is precisely the number of recommended by multiple insurance companies. The insurers remain highly supportive of serving the LSA market but have logged incidents by
experienced pilots that point to the need for additional training. Flight Design, the acknowledged market leader, is again taking the lead in assuring proper training. All distributors, dealers, and CT-qualified flight
instructors have been provided a copy of the flight training supplement. Supplements are available for all models of the CT-series LSA.

The Flight Design CTLS is a modern, all-carbon-fiber Light-Sport Aircraft with a wide, comfortable cabin with unparalleled visibility; flying 135 mph for 850 nautical miles using only 5 gallons per hour. A full glass panel, Garmin radio stack, and a BRS airframe parachute are all standard equipment. Flight Design LSA are backed with a nationwide service network, next-day parts availability and an established company serving more than 1,500
airplanes worldwide. Surveyed owners express high customer satisfaction.
